"Nel 1975, poco prima di partire per la fiera di Francoforte, passai dalla Clup. Francesca Piccarreta, che si occupava del settore di architettura, mi fece vedere delle piccole monografie su Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe e Alvar Aalto da poco pubblicate da un editore svizzero.

Non le conoscevo; lei le trovava molto valide. Così a Francoforte passai dallo stand di Artemis, per chiedere (in verità senza troppa convinzione) se quei titoli erano liberi. La trattativa fu sorprendentemente facile e rapida. Devo dunque a Francesca l'idea della "Serie di Architettura", che negli anni Ottanta sarebbe diventata la più importante collana di varia del catalogo Zanichelli. Il successo dei primi tre titoli tradotti mi convinse a provare anche

con monografie scritte da autori italiani: partirono due lettere a Zevi e Benevolo, e una terza a Pier Luigi Nervi. Benevolo non rispose. Per Nervi invece rispose il figlio. Il libro su Nervi venne poi curato dal nipote, Pier Luigi jr, da un anziano architetto dello studio, Giuseppe Positano, e da Paolo Desideri, che sarebbe più tardi diventato a sua volta uno dei più noti architetti italiani.

Da Zevi speravo di ottenere una monografia su Frank Lloyd Wright; Zevi non solo rispose positivamente, ma rilanciò proponendo, oltre a Wright, anche Mendelsohn e Terragni. Il rilancio aveva tutta l'aria del «tutto o niente», e così mi trovai a lavorare con lui su tre libri. Bruno Zevi è stato certamente la personalità più forte che io abbia conosciuto in trent'anni di lavoro: non andavamo d'accordo quasi su niente, ma c'era (almeno per quanto mi riguarda) una specie di attrazione fatale. Credo che abbia influenzato molto il mio carattere, o almeno mi piace pensarlo oggi che ho un'età vicina a quella che aveva lui negli anni Settanta.

The importance of the architect to the quality and character of any society is not usually as widely regarded as it deserves to be. While every past civilization is, to a considerable extent, recognized and judged by its architecture, its creators are in general little known or revered; it would seem as though the buildings which are of such importance to our lives have spontaneously appeared as if by magic. Civilizations are more widely evaluated by their literature, music, painting and sculpture and other useful artefacts, while architecture is merely taken for granted.
In this century, however, where great and far-reaching developments have occurred which require examination and justification, architects have come to be regarded with a mixture of interest, suspicion and sometimes dismay. All this has served to transform the interest of the general public in architecture and the architect is beginning to be appreciated and valued.
When they have great strength of character, lucidity of exposition and, in the view of the media, an interesting personal history as well, they have become publicly recognized figures of social importance. None more so than the subject of this book whose personality and achievement has, unlike many of his peers, dominated the first half of this century. With such figures as Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe, he is recognized as a creative architectural genius. His singular individual achievement, as a native-born American, was to gather together the strands of American historical architecture and create a corpus of work which is both modern and essentially American.
