The Norman Foster Studio : Consistency Through Diversity

The Norman Foster Studio :
Consistency Through Diversity
PDF | 224 Pages | 10 mb

Malcolm Quantrill first met Norman Foster in 1991, when he wrote an article on Foster's Tokyo Century Tower. The result was a collaboration between unatrill and the Foster studio in the production of this unique study of the Foster ethos.

The Norman Foster Studio offers a number of original revelations about the philosophy and design methods that have generated the reputation of the Foster studio over the past three decades.

Quantrill's explorations begin with a distinctly personal account of Norman Foster's childhood and beginnings in the world of architecture, and continues with a dialohue between the author and each of the five members of the Foster parternship.

At the core of this book is the provocative critique of some of Foster's key buildings and projects including the Joslyn Museum Extension in Omaha.

In the first truly comprehensive critique of the Foster oeuvre, the book is fully illustrated throughout and contains many original drawings by SirNorman Foster and much previously unpublished material from the practice archives.

Norman Foster and the British Museum

Norman Foster and the British Museum

A landmark in the history of the British Museum and one of Norman Foster's most significant projects to date, the Great Court has reclaimed and reinvigorated one of London's most important public spaces, transforming the Museum.

Published to coincide with a major retrospective of Foster's work held at the British Museum, this volume brings together essays, design drawings and photographs to provide an account of the development and completion of Foster's project.

An introductory essay by Deyan Sudjic presents the Great Court as the culmination of centuries of change within the Museum - a reconciliation of past and future which has both restored and transfigured the heart of this public institution.

Spencer de Grey, a partner at Foster and Partners, documents the design and construction of the individual elements within the Great Court and the vast glazed canopy which surmounts them. The volume is introduced by Norman Foster and illustrated with photographs of the Great Court during its construction and in its spectacular finished state.

Architecture, Technology and Process.

Architecture, Technology and Process.

This new selection of essays follows Chris Abel's previous best selling collection, Architecture and Identity. Drawing upon a wide range of knowledge and disciplines, the author argues that, underlying technological changes in the process of architectural production are fundamental changes in the way we think about machines and the world we live in.

Key topics include: new patterns of urbanism in the fast growing cities of asia pacific; metaphorical extensions of mind and body in cyberspace; the divergent European and North American values shaping Sir Norman Foster's and Frank Gehry's work, and the collaborative work methods and technologies creating the adaptable design pratices of today.
