Mario Botta: Architectural Poetics

Mario Botta: Architectural Poetics
English | 2001 |240 pages | PDF | 32,8 MB

Mario Botta: Architectural Poetics is the newest book in the Universe architecture series. This volume presents the work of the Swiss-born architect who worked as an assistant to such architecture giants as Le Corbusier and Louis I. Kahn before starting his own firm in 1970 and achieving international fame. Botta' characteristic respect for topographical conditions and regional sensibilities, his deft craftsmanship and the importance of geometric order in his work are evidenced in thirty projects that range from smaller residential buildings to such grandiose projects as the Church of San Giovanni Battista, the Jean Tinguely Museum and, most famously, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. This detailed study also includes the designs he created for furniture and the stage. Mario Botta: Architectural Poetics is a thorough survey of the architectural and design work that launched Botta into the pantheon of modern architecture.

Valode & Pistre Architects

Valode & Pistre Architects
English

The firm of Denis Valode and Jean Pistre, which has been practicing for 25 years, entered upon a new phase of its career in 1992, when the architects in cooperation with the landscape architect Kathryn Gustafson received the Equerre d'argent prize of the journal Le Moniteur for the L Oréal corporate headquarters outside Paris.

Their predominantly large-scale projects are distinguished by their high degree of diversity. For some years, Valode & Pistre have not only been practicing in France, their native country, but also maintain offices in Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Russia, Mexico, China, and elsewhere.

This book contains detailed presentations of 18 projects by Valode & Pistre, with documentation focusing on the specific working and design methods of the architects. Projects presented include the Renault Technocentre in Guyancourt, France; the Las Mercedes business park in Madrid, Spain; a group of office and hotel towers in Beijing, China; and the Hyatt Hotel in Ekaterinburg, Russia.

Ten Houses : Wheeler Kearns Architects

Ten Houses : Wheeler Kearns Architects

Wheeler Kearns Architects seeks out small- to medium-sized projects with intellectually challenging programs and involved clients. The firm enjoys these projects, typically institutional or residential, because they best utilize its talents and coincide with established goals.

Holding fast to this groundwork has proved valuable as Wheeler Kearns Architects has gained recognition. Early notice for its residential work in 1989 by the AIA's Chicago Chapter was followed in 1992 by the AIA's national publication, Architecture, when it included Wheeler Kearns Architects in their list of nine national firms of "emerging talent."

The firm operates a Website at [http://wkarch.com] that not only distributes project information among consultants and clients, but also has portions open to the general public and is periodically updated.

Hopkins 2: The Work of Michael Hopkins and Partners

Hopkins 2: The Work of Michael Hopkins and Partners
240 pages | 2001 | JPG | 350 MB

Michael Hopkins' recent architecture defies easy categorization. The High Tech style of his formative years has developed into something much richer. In buildings like the Glyndebourne Opera House, the Inland Revenue Centre and the New Parliamentary Building, a new toughness and individuality has emerged.

These buildings have the uncompromising quality of certain 19th-century industrial buildings, yet they have managed to gain acceptance among some of Britain's most ancient institutions.

They are often hybrid creations, juxtaposing strongly contrasting elements - lightweight fabric structures and massive loadbearing walls, for example - yet they remain loyal to a strict code of truth to materials and honesty of expression.

Traditional and new forms of construction are combined in unconventional ways, often using innovative prefabrication techniques, but without sacrificing traditional craft virtues. This monograph documents the consolidation of Hopkins' mature style over the last 10 years.

An essay by respected architecture critic Charles Jencks examines themes and historical precedent in the buildings. Detailed presentations of over 20 buildings and projects analyze the genesis and logic of a unique and now instantly recognizable architecture.

The book's publication coincides with Hopkins' most important commission to date, the New Parliamentary Building in London's Westminster, which has an extensive presentation in the book, and which is also discussed in an essay by writer and architect Patrick Hodgkinson. "Hopkins 2" also includes works published as unbuilt projects in the previous monograph, including Glyndebourne Opera House and the Inland Revenue Centre, Nottingham.

2G №5 - Eduardo Souto de Moura
Spanish/English | Gustavo Gili | 1998 | PDF | 144 pages | 54 Mb

Eduardo Souto de Moura (b. Oporto, 1952) is one of the greatest architects on the contemporary Portuguese scene. A key figure among recent generations of architects in his country, it is he who has assumed the mantle the two great maestros of modern Portuguese architecture : Fernando Tavora and Alvaro Siza.

In 1990 Editorial Gustavo Gili published the first monograph devoted to his work, and the growing interest expressed by the international critical community since then has motivated us to publish this second monographic issue, which complements the first by focussing on the recent, extensive output of the architect.
