Frank Lloyd Wright (Taschen Publishing)

Frank Lloyd Wright (Taschen Publishing)
Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer, Frank Lloyd Wright
Taschen Publishing | | 2004
Text is in English, German and French.

Widely thought to be the greatest American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) was a true pioneer, both artistically and technically. At a time when reinforced concrete and steel were considered industrial building materials, Wright boldly made use of them to build private homes. His prairie house concept—that of a low, sprawling home based upon a simple L or T figure—was the driving force behind some of his most famous houses and became a model for rural architecture across America. Wright`s designs for office and public buildings were equally groundbreaking and unique. From Fallingwater to New York`s Guggenheim Museum, his works are among the most famous in the history of architecture.

The Architecture Of Rasem Badran : Narratives On People And Place

The Architecture Of Rasem Badran : Narratives On People And Place
James Steele

A complete overview of the work of the most important architect in the Middle East today.

Rasem Badran's influence is rapidly spreading throughout the developing world. His work involves the full spectrum of the built environment, from urban planning to individual residences. He concentrates on making architecture that meets the social and cultural requirements of the people who use it, as well as being place-specific in response to environmental conditions. Born in Jerusalem in 1945, Badran was educated in Ramallah and then in Germany, which had a profound impact on his approach to design. His well-balanced education, beginning with a traveling apprenticeship with his father and continuing through a fertile and exciting time of experimental architecture in Europe, has allowed him to weave a systematically rational, Western methodology with the intuitive traditions inherent in his own cultural background.

Badran designs buildings and environments that stand in stark contrast to self-conscious, anonymous architecture devoid of any reference to people, place, or culture. He offers a humane option to the deliberately commodified, blatantly branded, aesthetically objectified, and environmentally inarticulate architecture that is becoming the norm in the developed world today. 300 illustrations, 250 in color.

Norman Foster and the British Museum

Norman Foster and the British Museum
Norman Foster

A landmark in the history of the British Museum and one of Norman Foster's most significant projects to date, the Great Court has reclaimed and reinvigorated one of London's most important public spaces, transforming the Museum. Published to coincide with a major retrospective of Foster's work held at the British Museum, this volume brings together essays, design drawings and photographs to provide an account of the development and completion of Foster's project. An introductory essay by Deyan Sudjic presents the Great Court as the culmination of centuries of change within the Museum - a reconciliation of past and future which has both restored and transfigured the heart of this public institution. Spencer de Grey, a partner at Foster and Partners, documents the design and construction of the individual elements within the Great Court and the vast glazed canopy which surmounts them. The volume is introduced by Norman Foster and illustrated with photographs of the Great Court during its construction and in its spectacular finished state.

LOUIS KAHN - The Library at Phillips Exeter Academy

LOUIS KAHN - The Library at Phillips Exeter Academy
Glenn E. Wiggins

"The Library at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, NH, has won the Twenty-Five Year award from the American Institute of Architects. The award is bestowed annually on an American work of architecture that has proved its merit over a life of at least a quarter of a century. … The Exeter Library, which opened in 1971, was designed by Louis I. Kahn (1901–74). Kahn … accomplished something no one else had quite figured out how to do. He made modern buildings that achieved the timeless, monumental presence of the great works of the past. … Kahn respected books. ‘Nobody ever paid the price of a book; they pay only for the printing,’ he once said. Exeter is his attempt to embody, in brick and teak and marble and concrete, the essence of a particular kind of institution: the house of books, the library." —Robert Campbell, The Boston Globe.

Le Corbusier in Detail

Le Corbusier in Detail
Flora Samuel

English

This is the first book to give such close attention to Le Corbusier's approach to the making of buildings. It illustrates the ways in which Le Corbusier's details were expressive of his overall philosophical intentions. It is not a construction book in the usual sense- rather it focusses on the meaning of detail, on the ways in which detail informs the overall architectural narrative of a building. Well illustrated and containing several specially prepared scaled drawings it acts as timely reminder to both students and architects of the possibilities inherent in the most small scale tectonic gestures.

* Lavishly illustrated, with numerous in depth studies this book will be an inspiration to both students and architects
* This is the first book to illustrate Le Corbusier's philosophies through his use of detail
* So innovative was Le Corbusier's approach to design and so influential has he been on the current generation of architects that his work remains as relevant today as it ever did

Finnish architect, Alvar Aalto, is one of the great architects of the 20th century. Although his early work was influenced by the neoclassic movement, he went on to develop his own individual form of architecture which was functionalist yet expressionist, incorporating humane aspects into his work. This special edition provides a compact overview of his works, complete with plans, illustrations and explanatory texts. It is an ideal introduction to the work of Alvar Aalto and highlights his unique contribution to 20th century architecture.

Frank Lloyd Wright - Usonia

Frank Lloyd Wright - Usonia
Eduardo Sacriste

Frank Gehry - MARTa Herford

Frank Gehry - MARTa Herford
By MARTa Freunde und Förderer
Birkhäuser Basel | pages 112 | 2005-05-06 | 7,7 MB
English, German

Located at the center of the German furniture manufacturing
industry, Marta, the latest European Museum by Frank O.
Gehry, opened in December 2004 to universal acclaim. Conceived
as a laboratory for redefining the relationship between art,
design, and industry, this Gehry masterwork houses art
galleries, a library, educational facilities, and conference
and cultural meeting rooms. While the gallery is, for Gehry,
an uncharacteristic neutral white cube, it is wrapped in a
series of bulging curvatures creating a dome that announces
his distinctive architectural signature. This book, which
contains previously unpublished material on the design and
construction of the museum, offers insight into the working
process of arguably the world's most famous architect, and
his ideas about the shifting boundaries between industry,
design, art, and architecture

Frank Gehry - The City and Music

Frank Gehry - The City and Music
Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe

Frank Gehry: The City and Music is the result of a unique collaboration between the architect and leading critic Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe. It focuses on two projects, Gehry's unrealised proposal for the rehabilitation of Berlin's Museum Island and his soon to be completed Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, while discussing other projects such as the Pavilion for the Performing Arts in Concord, California, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, and the Experience Music Project in Seattle. Gehry's much debated relationship to Minimalist sculpture, use of new building materials and attitude to tradition, are discussed with regard to his belief in architecture as a democratic practice which is at once practical and expressive.
