Valode & Pistre Architects

Valode & Pistre Architects
English

The firm of Denis Valode and Jean Pistre, which has been practicing for 25 years, entered upon a new phase of its career in 1992, when the architects in cooperation with the landscape architect Kathryn Gustafson received the Equerre d'argent prize of the journal Le Moniteur for the L Oréal corporate headquarters outside Paris.

Their predominantly large-scale projects are distinguished by their high degree of diversity. For some years, Valode & Pistre have not only been practicing in France, their native country, but also maintain offices in Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Russia, Mexico, China, and elsewhere.

This book contains detailed presentations of 18 projects by Valode & Pistre, with documentation focusing on the specific working and design methods of the architects. Projects presented include the Renault Technocentre in Guyancourt, France; the Las Mercedes business park in Madrid, Spain; a group of office and hotel towers in Beijing, China; and the Hyatt Hotel in Ekaterinburg, Russia.

Dominique Perrault's architecture and urban designs are strictly modern, yet his simple and efficient shapes contain a classical and timeless element.

He constantly manages to satisfy the need to be reasonable without sacrificing the aesthetic awareness that breathes life into his buildings.

Ten Houses : Wheeler Kearns Architects

Ten Houses : Wheeler Kearns Architects

Wheeler Kearns Architects seeks out small- to medium-sized projects with intellectually challenging programs and involved clients. The firm enjoys these projects, typically institutional or residential, because they best utilize its talents and coincide with established goals.

Holding fast to this groundwork has proved valuable as Wheeler Kearns Architects has gained recognition. Early notice for its residential work in 1989 by the AIA's Chicago Chapter was followed in 1992 by the AIA's national publication, Architecture, when it included Wheeler Kearns Architects in their list of nine national firms of "emerging talent."

The firm operates a Website at [http://wkarch.com] that not only distributes project information among consultants and clients, but also has portions open to the general public and is periodically updated.

Frank Lloyd Wright

Frank Lloyd Wright
Text is in English, German and French.

Widely thought to be the greatest American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) was a true pioneer, both artistically and technically.

At a time when reinforced concrete and steel were considered industrial building materials, Wright boldly made use of them to build private homes.

His prairie house concept—that of a low, sprawling home based upon a simple L or T figure—was the driving force behind some of his most famous houses and became a model for rural architecture across America.

Wright`s designs for office and public buildings were equally groundbreaking and unique. From Fallingwater to New York`s Guggenheim Museum, his works are among the most famous in the history of architecture.

The Norman Foster Studio : Consistency Through Diversity

The Norman Foster Studio :
Consistency Through Diversity
PDF | 224 Pages | 10 mb

Malcolm Quantrill first met Norman Foster in 1991, when he wrote an article on Foster's Tokyo Century Tower. The result was a collaboration between unatrill and the Foster studio in the production of this unique study of the Foster ethos.

The Norman Foster Studio offers a number of original revelations about the philosophy and design methods that have generated the reputation of the Foster studio over the past three decades.

Quantrill's explorations begin with a distinctly personal account of Norman Foster's childhood and beginnings in the world of architecture, and continues with a dialohue between the author and each of the five members of the Foster parternship.

At the core of this book is the provocative critique of some of Foster's key buildings and projects including the Joslyn Museum Extension in Omaha.

In the first truly comprehensive critique of the Foster oeuvre, the book is fully illustrated throughout and contains many original drawings by SirNorman Foster and much previously unpublished material from the practice archives.

The Architecture Of Rasem Badran: Narratives On People And Place

The Architecture Of Rasem Badran:
Narratives On People And Place

A complete overview of the work of the most important architect in the Middle East today.

Rasem Badran's influence is rapidly spreading throughout the developing world. His work involves the full spectrum of the built environment, from urban planning to individual residences. He concentrates on making architecture that meets the social and cultural requirements of the people who use it, as well as being place-specific in response to environmental conditions. Born in Jerusalem in 1945, Badran was educated in Ramallah and then in Germany, which had a profound impact on his approach to design. His well-balanced education, beginning with a traveling apprenticeship with his father and continuing through a fertile and exciting time of experimental architecture in Europe, has allowed him to weave a systematically rational, Western methodology with the intuitive traditions inherent in his own cultural background.

Badran designs buildings and environments that stand in stark contrast to self-conscious, anonymous architecture devoid of any reference to people, place, or culture. He offers a humane option to the deliberately commodified, blatantly branded, aesthetically objectified, and environmentally inarticulate architecture that is becoming the norm in the developed world today. 300 illustrations, 250 in color.

Le Corbusier in Detail

Le Corbusier in Detail
English

This is the first book to give such close attention to Le Corbusier's approach to the making of buildings. It illustrates the ways in which Le Corbusier's details were expressive of his overall philosophical intentions. It is not a construction book in the usual sense- rather it focusses on the meaning of detail, on the ways in which detail informs the overall architectural narrative of a building. Well illustrated and containing several specially prepared scaled drawings it acts as timely reminder to both students and architects of the possibilities inherent in the most small scale tectonic gestures.

* Lavishly illustrated, with numerous in depth studies this book will be an inspiration to both students and architects
* This is the first book to illustrate Le Corbusier's philosophies through his use of detail
* So innovative was Le Corbusier's approach to design and so influential has he been on the current generation of architects that his work remains as relevant today as it ever did

Frank Lloyd Wright (A cura di Bruno Zevi)

Frank Lloyd Wright (A cura di Bruno Zevi)
italiano

Frank Gehry - MARTa Herford

Frank Gehry - MARTa Herford
English, German  | pages 112 | 2005

Located at the center of the German furniture manufacturing
industry, Marta, the latest European Museum by Frank O.
Gehry, opened in December 2004 to universal acclaim.

Conceived
as a laboratory for redefining the relationship between art,
design, and industry, this Gehry masterwork houses art
galleries, a library, educational facilities, and conference
and cultural meeting rooms.

While the gallery is, for Gehry,
an uncharacteristic neutral white cube, it is wrapped in a
series of bulging curvatures creating a dome that announces
his distinctive architectural signature.

This book, which
contains previously unpublished material on the design and
construction of the museum, offers insight into the working
process of arguably the world's most famous architect, and
his ideas about the shifting boundaries between industry,
design, art, and architecture.

Frank Gehry - The City and Music

Frank Gehry - The City and Music

The City and Music is the result of a unique collaboration between the architect and leading critic Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe. It focuses on two projects, Gehry's unrealised proposal for the rehabilitation of Berlin's Museum Island and his soon to be completed Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, while discussing other projects such as the Pavilion for the Performing Arts in Concord, California, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, and the Experience Music Project in Seattle. Gehry's much debated relationship to Minimalist sculpture, use of new building materials and attitude to tradition, are discussed with regard to his belief in architecture as a democratic practice which is at once practical and expressive.

Architecture for the Poor: An Experiment in Rural Egypt

Architecture for the Poor:
An Experiment in Rural Egypt
Hassan Fathy,
366 pages | PDF | 31 Mb

Architecture for the Poor describes Hassan Fathy's plan for building the village of New Gourna, near Luxor, Egypt, without the use of more modern and expensive materials such as steel and concrete.

Using mud bricks, the native technique that Fathy learned in Nubia, and such traditional Egyptian architectural designs as enclosed courtyards and vaulted roofing, Fathy worked with the villagers to tailor his designs to their needs.

He taught them how to work with the bricks, supervised the erection of the buildings, and encouraged the revival of such ancient crafts as claustra (lattice designs in the mudwork) to adorn the buildings.

Archigram : Architecture without Architecture

Archigram : Architecture without Architecture
2005 | 440 pages | PDF | 10,8 Mb

In the 1960s, the architects of Britain's Archigram group and Archigram magazine turned away from conventional architecture to propose cities that move and houses worn like suits of clothes. In drawings inspired by pop art and psychedelia, architecture floated away, tethered by wires, gantries, tubes, and trucks.

In Archigram: Architecture without Architecture, Simon Sadler argues that Archigram's sense of fun takes its place beside the other cultural agitants of the 1960s, originating attitudes and techniques that became standard for architects rethinking social space and building technology.

The Archigram style was assembled from the Apollo missions, constructivism, biology, manufacturing, electronics, and popular culture, inspiring an architectural movement—High Tech—and influencing the postmodern and deconstructivist trends of the late twentieth century.

Although most Archigram projects were at the limits of possibility and remained unbuilt, the six architects at the center of the movement, Warren Chalk, Peter Cook, Dennis Crompton, David Greene, Ron Herron, and Michael Webb, became a focal point for the architectural avant-garde, because they redefined the purpose of architecture.

Countering the habitual building practice of setting walls and spaces in place, Archigram architects wanted to provide the equipment for amplified living, and they welcomed any cultural rearrangements that would ensue.

Archigram: Architecture without Architecture—the first full-length critical and historical account of the Archigram phenomenon—traces Archigram from its rediscovery of early modernist verve through its courting of students, to its ascent to international notoriety for advocating the "disappearance of architecture."

Hopkins 2: The Work of Michael Hopkins and Partners

Hopkins 2: The Work of Michael Hopkins and Partners
240 pages | 2001 | JPG | 350 MB

Michael Hopkins' recent architecture defies easy categorization. The High Tech style of his formative years has developed into something much richer. In buildings like the Glyndebourne Opera House, the Inland Revenue Centre and the New Parliamentary Building, a new toughness and individuality has emerged.

These buildings have the uncompromising quality of certain 19th-century industrial buildings, yet they have managed to gain acceptance among some of Britain's most ancient institutions.

They are often hybrid creations, juxtaposing strongly contrasting elements - lightweight fabric structures and massive loadbearing walls, for example - yet they remain loyal to a strict code of truth to materials and honesty of expression.

Traditional and new forms of construction are combined in unconventional ways, often using innovative prefabrication techniques, but without sacrificing traditional craft virtues. This monograph documents the consolidation of Hopkins' mature style over the last 10 years.

An essay by respected architecture critic Charles Jencks examines themes and historical precedent in the buildings. Detailed presentations of over 20 buildings and projects analyze the genesis and logic of a unique and now instantly recognizable architecture.

The book's publication coincides with Hopkins' most important commission to date, the New Parliamentary Building in London's Westminster, which has an extensive presentation in the book, and which is also discussed in an essay by writer and architect Patrick Hodgkinson. "Hopkins 2" also includes works published as unbuilt projects in the previous monograph, including Glyndebourne Opera House and the Inland Revenue Centre, Nottingham.

Alvar Aalto - Works and Projects

Alvar Aalto (Obras y Proyectos / Works and Projects)
 English, Spanish

Finnish architect, Alvar Aalto, is one of the great architects of the 20th century. Although his early work was influenced by the neoclassic movement, he went on to develop his own individual form of architecture which was functionalist yet expressionist, incorporating humane aspects into his work.

This special edition provides a compact overview of his works, complete with plans, illustrations and explanatory texts. It is an ideal introduction to the work of Alvar Aalto and highlights his unique contribution to 20th century architecture.
